Crafted Art Project
Leap School was one of a handful of West Cork schools that were successful in their
application to the Crafts Council of Ireland for an artist in residence project. Our chosen
area was construction.
In November Lian Callaghan came to our school. She did amazing work with the
children. Everyone got to take part.
Lian started by talking about the willow and how easy it is to work with.
Under her expert guidance the junior pupils made colourful wigwams for their teddies.
The pupils in the middle classes got to make wigwams for themselves while the senior
classes constructed a willow hut in the school grounds.
On Lians last day with us we invited the parents to come and see our work. We put all
our wigwams on display in the schoolyard. It was a very colourful sight. A photographer
from our local newspaper,”The Southern Star” came and took photos of our work. We
were very proud when our photos were published a few weeks later
