School Activities
We aim to encourage pupils to get involved in a wide range of actvities in order to develop fitness, knowledge, confidence and of course fun!
School Choir:
We have a school choir that sing on special occasions in the local church.
Swimming Lessons:
All pupils attend swimming lessons each year.
Sciath Na Scol Football Competition:
Children also participate in the Sciath Na Scol Football competition. We use the facilities of the nearby Kilmacabea GAA Football Club when training
for this competition.
Sailing Course:
The pupils in the senior classes get the opportunity to do a three-day sailing course in Glandore Harbour every year. The classes are organised and
run by Glandore Harbour Yacht Club . Older students and parents help out too. These classes are very popular.
School Garden:
We have started a school garden. We have three raised beds. The Parents Association are helping us with this project, We have planted potatoes,
onions, carrots, turnip, beetroot, lettuce, rhubarb, strawberries, sunflowers and nasturtiums. We have herbs such as chives and thyme growing in our
school garden too.
Cycle Safety:
Pupils got a chance to learn all about cycle safety and the rules of the road.
Arts Project:
Leap School was one of a handful of West Cork schools that were successful in their application to the Crafts Council of Ireland for an artist in
residence project. Our chosen area was construction. In November Lian Callaghan came to our school. She did amazing work with the children.
Everyone got to take part. Lian started by talking about the willow and how easy it is to work with. Under her expert guidance the junior pupils made
colourful wigwams for their teddies. The pupils in the middle classes got to make wigwams for themselves while the senior classes constructed a
willow hut in the school grounds. On Lians last day with us we invited the parents to come and see our work. We put all our wigwams on display in the
schoolyard. It was a very colourful sight. A photographer from our local newspaper,”The Southern Star” came and took photos of our work. We were
very proud when our photos were published a few weeks later
Ceili Dancing:
The pupils learned céilí dancing classes for 8 weeks in the spring term. Their teacher was Mr. Bert Moran. They learned a lot of steps including The
Walls of Limerick, The Two Hand Reel and many more. The favourite step was The Highland Fling. The classes were enjoyed by all. Our last class
coincided with Seachtain na Gaeilge. Bhí céilí mór againn sa halla mór. Thosaigh an céilí ar a deich a chlog. Lean sé go dti leathuair tar éis a
dódhéag. Bhí spórt agus spraoi againn go léir. Thugamar cuireadh do na tuismitheoirí, do na sean tuismitheoirí agus dár gcairde teacht ar a leathuair
tar éis a haon-déag . Bhí an lá go deas agus chuamar amach go dtí an clós os comhair na scoile. Bert had the music set up for us and the parents and
grandparents joined in the dancing too.
Christmas Shoebox Appeal:
Each year we take part in the Christmas Shoebox Appeal. These boxes are given to children in countries where there is war and poverty. We hope
they cheer them up when they open them .
Christmas Concert:
We had a Christmas concert on the day before our Christmas Holidays. It almost didn’t happen because of all the snow and ice! Luckily we had done
lots of rehearsals and all went well on the day. The junior classes sang Christmas songs and told Christmas poems. The middle classes did a play as
Gaeilge and the senior classes did a play too. Parents were invited to our performance.
Visit of Sam Maguire:
Our local Kilmacabea G.A.A. club organised for the Sam Maguire trophy to visit the school in January. We had a red and white day for this very special
occasion. We got a chance to have our photographs taken with the cup.
